About the role
**Head of Risk & Credit Policy – Specialty Commercial Finance & FinTech**
Location: 100% Remote (U.S.-based with periodic travel for executive alignment)
## Compensation
$180,000 – $220,000 Base Salary + Performance Bonus
Craft Recruiting has partnered with a fast-growing, highly capitalized commercial finance platform originating tens of millions monthly in small business financing. Backed by a premier institutional credit facility and led by an experienced executive team, the company is scaling beyond its core specialty lending products to launch an institutional Revolving Line of Credit (LOC) platform.
We are seeking a data-driven, high-ownership Head of Risk & Credit Policy to report directly to the Chief Executive Officer. In this seat, you will serve as the chief architect of the company’s credit risk framework—partnering with data science to build predictive probability-of-default (PD) models, designing automated decision logic, establishing underwriting policy, and operationalizing revolving credit lines from the ground up.
Key Requirements (At least two must be met to be considered)
- 8+ years of progressive credit risk, underwriting policy, or portfolio risk leadership within Merchant Cash Advance, Specialty Lending, or Commercial FinTech.
- Demonstrated direct experience designing, launching, or managing a commercial Revolving Line of Credit (LOC) or hybrid structured SMB working capital product.
- Advanced quantitative background (Master’s in Finance, Economics, Statistics, or an MBA/CFA) with hands-on experience translating statistical scorecards, automated decision engines, and predictive default models into actionable underwriting policy.
## Position Overview & Core Responsibilities
Reporting directly to the CEO, the Head of Risk & Credit Policy will serve as the strategic credit authority for the firm, establishing the formal risk parameters, automation rules, and governance frameworks necessary to scale new and existing credit products safely.
- Line of Credit Product Architecture: Own and formalize the complete credit policy, pricing matrices, and risk architecture for a brand-new commercial Revolving Line of Credit (LOC) product, including draw limits, recurring line increases, periodic reviews, and exposure caps.
- Quantitative Modeling & Data Science Collaboration: Partner directly with internal and external data science teams to develop, test, and calibrate Probability-of-Default (PD) models, loss forecasting curves, and automated decision-engine scorecards.
- Core Underwriting Policy & Governance: Review, refine, and modernize underwriting guidelines across the existing specialty commercial finance portfolio; establish clear authority tiers, exception approval workflows, and disciplined governance for underwriting operations.
- Anti-Fraud & Loss Mitigation: Design and deploy comprehensive fraud detection frameworks, synthetic identity checks, and bank-statement verification algorithms to eliminate early payment defaults and mitigate stacking risks.
- Executive & Facility Reporting: Serve as the primary risk liaison to executive leadership and institutional warehouse lenders, delivering regular reporting on loss provisioning, default probability trends, and portfolio performance metrics.
## Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field is required; an advanced degree (MS, MBA) or professional designation (CFA, PRM) is strongly preferred.
- 8–15+ years of credit risk and policy leadership in specialty commercial finance, fintech lending, or tech-enabled commercial banking environments.
- Deep understanding of high-velocity specialty finance mechanics, alternative credit data, cash flow underwriting, and debt facility compliance.
- Proven track record partnering effectively with data scientists, product teams, and underwriting management to deploy automated decisioning.
- High autonomy, builder mindset, and comfort designing institutional-grade risk policies from scratch in a high-growth environment.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; ability to travel periodically for executive meetings.
## What’s in It for You
- Competitive Total Rewards: $180,000 – $220,000 base salary plus performance-driven annual bonus and comprehensive benefits (health, dental, vision, 401(k), and generous PTO).
- Strategic Autonomy: True builder seat reporting directly to the CEO with full ownership over the credit risk architecture and new product policy.
- 100% Remote Flexibility: Lead national risk strategy remotely while collaborating with a high-caliber, forward-thinking executive leadership team.
